INSTRUCTION CHALLENGES PRIVATE LESSONS OFFER INTENSIVE ENRICHMENT Private instruction is available for band students through the CFBISD private lesson program. Our private instructors are professional musicians who are among the finest teachers in the city. Teachers are available to teach weekly lessons. Some teach at Long while others may teach at Newman Smith, Blalack, RLTurner, Creekview or out of their own homes. Lessons are scheduled at the convenience of both students and teacher, and tuition is $16.00 for approximately 30 minutes of instruction. (Some students take hour-long lessons.) Should students be in a 50 or 55 minute class period, lessons may be 25 minutes in length since this is considered a major convenience for parents. In some cases, group lessons will be offered to two or three students simultaneously. The cost per student will be $11.00 and will generally occur during class. Scholarships will be available for families needing financial assistance. Scholarships may vary between $5 to $16 per week. Certain expectations apply to all students taking lessons. A sheet listing these will be signed by the student, parent(s), lesson instructor, and band director by the second lesson. Failure to follow these expectations may cause the loss of scholarship and loss of lessons. Private instruction is an enrichment program which enables students to learn at their own pace and receive specialized information tailored to their individual needs. Further, regular communication takes place between directors and private staff so that specific details can be reinforced during both band class and private lessons. An extra lesson per week of one-on-one instruction has a dramatic impact on the level of satisfaction and proficiency students experience. Students playing school-owned instruments are specially requested to study privately because of the limited availability of these instruments, and to help ensure the success of each student using these instruments. Our private teachers contribute significantly to the successes of our organizations. While band directors are trained and experienced in teaching all instruments, specialized private instruction is a valuable tool in helping students reach full potential. Our goal is to provide each band student with the finest musical training that we can. Private instruction is a part of this training, and we encourage your participation. Currently, students may schedule lessons during class or before/after school depending on the private teacher’s schedule. Lessons are paid at the first of the month for the entire month.
