UPDATED REGION BAND TRYOUT PROCEDURES

...tryout procedures information to be posted...basic information listed below.

DISTRICT HONOR BAND...WHAT IS IT?

All-District Band is an individual competition held at DeWitt Perry Middle School (1709 Belt Line Rd., Carrollton) from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Wednesday, October 26.  Students will not have to be present the entire time.  This contest involves students from the six CFBISD middle schools.  Last year, around 650 students competed to form a band of approximately 90.

We do not wish to schedule an activity on Wednesday due to church conflicts but this year’s schedule was too difficult to work around.  This is the only Wednesday evening activity during this school year.

All members the Symphonic Band should attend these tryouts.  Some Concert Band members will be asked to attend the tryouts as well.  ANY interested band member may tryout.  Sectionals have been scheduled before or after school to work on the tryout music, scales, as well as the procedure to be used.

Students who pass all classes on their FIRST NINE WEEK REPORT CARD are eligible.  A student who fails this report card will not be eligible for District. (Region tryout eligibility is determined by the same report card.)

Students earning a position in the All-District Band will receive a medal.  The students will not perform a concert this year.

Entry fees for All-District Band are $5 per student.  Checks should be made payable to DFLBC and given to a band director on or before the end of September.

ALL-REGION BAND...WHAT IS IT?

In addition to the All-District Band, is the All-Region Band.  Any interested band member may also tryout for this
group.

Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD middle schools are a part of the Region XXIV All Region Band.  The region includes
middle schools from the following school districts:  Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, Lewisville ISD,
Grapevine-Colleyille ISD, Carroll ISD, Frisco ISD, and any private schools in the region.

Last year, almost 2000 students competed to make four bands.

The four bands from the Region 24 are scheduled to perform at R.L. Turner HS on Saturday, December 9.
Clinicians for the bands have not been announced but are well-respected and successful directors.
Transportation will be available for students.

See below for the tryout procedure.

DISTRICT TRYOUT PROCEDURE

This procedure will be similar to the Region procedure except all instruments will be a single phase.

The tryout consists of the following parts:

1.  Arrive early and locate your audition room or table.

2.  Check-in at your audition room/table.  You will be given a preassigned letter.  You will keep the same letter all day.  Do not trade letters.  You will tryout in letter order...AA-1st, AB-2nd, AC-3rd,...

3.  Your room may run ahead of schedule.  Be flexible but don't walk into the audition room without doing a warmup.

4.  After you complete your room you may leave; results will be posted on this web site late in the evening.

5.  Adults will monitor the hallway.  Be polite.  Disruptive students may be disqualified from the auditions.

bullet

bullet

There will be several Phase I rooms but only one Phase II room in each section.

The sightreading music will be 8-10 measures and the student will have 30 seconds to study (only)
before playing.

Percussion tryouts will follow a similar format.  All judges are "hidden" behind a curtain and may
not know who is performing.  More specific information will be prepared and given to each
student, plus the directors will help the students practice the tryout procedure so they are comfortable
with it.

Warm-up will be in a cafeteria or gym.

The Region tryout fee is $6 per student.  A check made payable to DFLBC is during October.
Students must pass the FIRST NINE WEEK REPORT CARD in all subjects in order to be
eligible.  Tryouts will be held at Lamar Middle School in Lewisville.  Since students do not need to
be present all day, transportation will be arranged in carpools or left to parent discretion.

Students who make one of the Region Bands will receive a patch following the Region Concert in January.

SECTIONALS

SYMPHONIC SECTIONALS have been scheduled and started Monday, August 27. Afternoon sectionals for students will begin at 4:05 and finish at 5:05. No sectionals will be held on student holidays. Private lesson instructors are a great resource for one-on-one help.

Regarding athletics, if your sectional is on as game day, you will be excused from the sectional.  If you have a later time on the game day and can attend part or all of the sectional it is expected for you to do so.

This music tends to be difficult at first; it is a terrific challenge for these musicians. It takes steady, persistent work from August to November to be successful and the directors, along with the private teachers, will be there to help.

Ask to see and hear what your son/daughter is preparing.
