When you are interested in buying a band instrument please consult with a band director.  Lists of step-up* and beginning  instruments are maintained so that students will play on instruments of a quality that will not inhibit their success.  Students who purchase instruments others than those listed often have a more difficult time performing to the standards of the class.  Just as important as the instrument is the mouthpiece.

*(A step-up instrument is a professional quality instrument better players may choose to buy at sometime between sixth grade and high school.  Often the band directors can give you an idea if it is the right time to pursue a step-up.)

Often instruments can be bought used.  If you find one (on the list or off), Mr. Black or Mrs. Parks can look it over and advise you on its condition.  If you have a beginner instrument and are looking for a step-up, be cautious.  For example, it is easy for a cornet student to go and find a trumpet to buy, but many models of trumpets play substantially worse.  This is certainly a detriment to the student and many times to the checkbook.

When you are interested in a step-up instrument, check the Recommended Step-up Instrument List below for the model information.  Next check with a band director about new price information and availability of used instruments.
